Description

Saint Simon Monastery located on top of a mount between Antakya (Antioch)-Samandağı Road and Asi River is reached from Değirmenbaşı Town.

The monastery is constructed on a hill top with an elevation of 479 meters within the boundaries of Aknehir Settlement. Saint Simon Monastery with its additions is a structure which is engraved partially on the rocks by using cut stones. It is settled on a rectangular area in the dimensions of 132x160 m. It is encircled by two walls that are parallel to each other and has entrances from three directions. Presently it has two entrances. Saint Simon had been a small child who had started to take religious training when he was too small and had devoted his whole life to God after that. It is rumoured that he had come to this mount and started to live here after taking an arduous religious training. When his name was heard and known by everyone day after day he had been swarmed with the visitors. His ability to treat the diseases despite his young age had made him exalted and therefore the mount where he had lived had been named as the mount of miracles. It is observed that this monastery built by engraving the rocks and using cut stones had been built in the form of cross.

This monastery constructed in the 6th century A.D, is recognized as the place where Saint Simon of Antioch had lived on a column for 40 years. In the monastery complex included in the map of faith tourism in Turkey has 3 churches, a baptistery, an octagonal courtyard and the column of Saint Simon in the middle. There are remains of cisterns, houses, kitchens, cellars in the nearby. Saint Simon had come here in 541 A.D., and died in 592 A.D.
