Description

Philadelphia was founded by Attalos Philadelphos II, one of the kings of Pergamon during the Hellenistic Period. During the Roman period, the city was known as 'Little Athens' due to the number of temples and festivals held there. The city maintained its importance during the Byzantine period and was surrounded by a solid city wall. One of the most significant monuments of the city is the ruins of the temple on the Toptepe plain, which was once the Acropolis of the ancient city of Philadelphia. Other surviving ruins from the city's glorious past include the walls built during the Byzantine period, the eastern gate, and the Church of St. John, which dates back to the 6th century A.D. The church was established in the name of John the Apostle and is one of the seven churches from early Christianity in the Aegean region. The pillars' height, thickness, and connection to the arches suggest that the structure was once magnificent. Currently, the church serves as a museum exhibiting artifacts collected from Alaşehir and its surroundings in the garden.
