Description

The Home Of Love And Beauty Aphrodisias was dedicated to the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite in antiquity. It boasts well-preserved monuments and was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017. During the Roman period, Aphrodisias was renowned for its statue of the goddess Aphrodite and its Sculpture School, which benefited from the rich marble deposits in the area. Aphrodisias was founded in the 6th century in an area of prehistoric settlement dating back to 5000 B.C. The first temple of Aphrodite was also built during this period. In the 2nd century, the city was laid out again on a grid plan and became an important religious center. During the 1st century B.C, while the city was under the protection of the Roman Emperor Augustus, many important monuments were built that still stand today. By the end of the 3rd century, the city had become one of the largest in the Carian province of the Roman Empire. However, its significance declined in the 6th century, and by the 12th century, the city had been completely abandoned. The Best-Preserved Stadium In The World Is Here! Aphrodisias is renowned for its well-preserved stadium from the ancient world and its monumental temple gate. The stadium, which is 270 meters long, has a seating capacity of 30,000 people. The temple of Aphrodite, which was converted into a church in 500 A.D., also retains its magnificence. The white marble theatre, which has a capacity of 7,000, is also worth seeing. The artifacts from the excavations are exhibited at the Afrodisias Museum, located at the entrance of the ancient city. The museum's richest collection comprises sarcophagi featuring statues and reliefs from the Aphrodisias sculpture school. This school was active from the late Hellenistic period to the early Byzantine period. While You Are Here The Karacasu district has a number of surviving houses and pottery workshops are worth visiting. Additionally, the Sırtlanini Cave, located near Karacasu district, is also a must-see destination, as it is home to bat colonies and spans 348 meters in length.
