Description

Where St. Nicholas Rests Saint Nicholas of Myra, also known as “Santa Claus” was born in Patara and lived in Myra where he was a bishop. He is believed to have passed away in this location, and a church was constructed in his honour over his tomb. His Stolen Bones Were Taken To Bari Saint Nicholas was born in 300 AD as the son of a wealthy wheat merchant in Patara, one of the most important port cities of the period. He served as the Bishop of Myra and passed away on 6th December, 365 AD at the age of 65. He was revered as the protector of children and sailors. In 1087, merchants from Bari travelling from Italy to Jerusalem by sea stopped in Myra and opened the tomb of St Nicholas, taking some of his remains. The relics of St. Nicholas are currently preserved in the Church of San Nicola in Bari, which was built in his honour. Some of the relics, believed to belong to the saint, are on display at the Antalya Museum. Miracles Have Been Painted On The Walls Of The Church The church built by the people of Myra in honour of St. Nicholas contains depictions of the miracles attributed to him. The church has undergone renovations over time and houses a Roman sarcophagus adorned with fish scales and acanthus leaves. It is believed that this sarcophagus belongs to Santa Claus, who is said to have passed away at this location. While You Are Here... The Lycian Civilisations Museum, located in Andiriake, the Harbor City of Myra, offers a historical journey through the murex producing workshops on carpets made from sea shells. It is recommended to visit the museum for a unique experience of the region's history.
