Description

The Amasra Museum is located in the Naval School, which was constructed in 1884 but never completed. After being restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1976, it opened to the public as a museum in 1982. The museum displays artefacts and works related to the history of Amasra and its surroundings, from the Hellenistic and Roman periods to the Byzantine, Genoese, and Ottoman periods. The museum comprises four exhibition halls. Two of these halls exhibit archaeological finds from the Amasra area, while the other two exhibit ethnographic collections. The Archaeological Hall The Archaeological Hall displays a range of artefacts from different historical periods, including arrowheads from the Bronze Age, terracotta artefacts from the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods, glass artefacts, jewellery, metal artefacts and icons from the Byzantine period, and coins from the Greek, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods. The Ethnographic Works Hall The artefacts such as local clothes, ornaments, jewellery, copper utensils, weapons and swords that belong mainly to the people living in and around Bartın and Amasra are exhibited here. The clothes unique to Amasra are displayed on silicone models. Visitors can also see a map of the Mediterranean Sea printed by the Ottoman Palace Printing House. The Tomb Steles The stelae in the museum are decorated with inscriptions and engraved figures describing the deceased. An example of an inscription is the following: "I, Demetrios, son of Agathos, who lived for 67 years, built the sarcophagus and stele at the tomb that can be seen in the eastern part of the terrain. My wife Aeliane is also buried there. I ask my sons, Menadros and Julianos Aelianus Demetrius, to return to piety for me and their mothers; she lived 76 years. 254 (184 A.D.), the 4th of the month of Daeisios. Garden The museum garden features a variety of historical artefacts, including sarcophagi, tombstones, altars, statues, and architectural elements made of marble. Additionally, there are large pithoi, amphorae, cannons, and anchors from the Ottoman period.
