Description

From the moment you enter Burdur Natural History Museum, you will be welcomed by the inhabitants of Burdur 2.5 million years ago. Burdur Natural History Museum reflects different periods of Burdur's history with its service building and the artefacts displayed in it. It is estimated that the Kavaklı Greek Church, which serves as Burdur Natural History Museum today, was built towards the end of the 19th century. The building was restored to its original state and opened as a natural history museum in 2016. The Burdur Basin and the formation at its base are lacustrine sediments. Swamps formed by tectonic movements within the basin gradually turn into lakes. The Elmacık Fossil Bed, located to the south of the Pliocene Lake of Burdur, is one of the most productive fossil beds in the Turkish lake region. The Pleistocene fossils found in the fossil beds of Elmacık village in Kemer district are exhibited in Burdur Natural History Museum after restoration and conservation processes. Natural history museums, which are among the scientific and cultural symbols of developed countries, are contemporary educational institutions that collect, archive and exhibit the knowledge of natural resources on a national and local scale and also provide educational/social activities.
