The village of Mazı, whose ancient name is “Mataza", is situated 18 kilometres south of Ürgüp and 10 kilometres east of the underground city of Kaymakli. There are at least four entrances to the underground city, located in different places. The main entrance is a short corridor made of irregular stones. A large sliding stone in the short corridor provides control of the entrances and exits. The small room in the interior was constructed for the comfortable movement of the sliding stone. The prevalence of stables across a significant portion of the underground settlement is a notable feature. The Church of the Underground City is accessible via a short corridor from the stables. The entrance can be secured with a bolt stone. The church apse is carved into the long edge corner and decorated with reliefs.
