Description

Beşkonaklar (Five Mansions) is a prime example of Malatya's traditional civil architecture that has survived to this day. These mansions were built in the early 1900s by Hacı Sait Efendi (Turfanda) and his brothers, and were home to some of the leading families of Malatya. Each mansion has the same plan and architectural features, consisting of two floors - the ground floor and the upper floor - with a pinnacle (cihannüma), a bay window (cumba), and balconies. The entrance door leads to the courtyard (hayat/taşlık), which is typically used in the summer. The spaces on either side of the hall serve as a kitchen with a fireplace, pantry, and rooms, followed by the courtyard. Upstairs, there is a central sofa with rooms surrounding it. The museum displays handicrafts, fabric prints, clothing, accessories, kitchen tools and equipment, lighting and measuring instruments, firearms, cutting weapons, and seals from the Malatya region.
