Marmari̇s Castle; The Memento Of Sultan The Magnificient The Marmaris Castle is situated on a peninsula overlooking the sea. The earliest known information about the castle was provided by Herodotus from Halicarnassus (Bodrum). He stated that the castle was constructed in 3000 BC. Evliya Çelebi, a prominent Ottoman traveler of the 17th century, references in his renowned travelogue that the fortress was constructed in 1522 during the Rhodes expedition at the command of Süleyman the Magnificent. He also notes the presence of a 40-foot-long square ashlar stonework on the foundation, which he attributes to an ancient period. These blocks are still visible and are the remains of a 2000-year-old castle belonging to the Hellenistic period. The inscription on the building, which was built during the Ottoman period, is still in place. Museum In The Ottoman Castle The castle was settled by residents until the 1980s. It has been serving as a museum since 1991, following the completion of the restoration. It has a total of seven closed spaces, with four closed spaces and the courtyard exhibiting a collection of artefacts from the Bronze Age, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Eastern Roman and Ottoman periods. The artefacts from the excavations of the ancient city of Knidos in Datça, Burgaz excavations and Emecik Apollon sanctuary excavations, as well as rare artefacts that have been added to the Museum collection in different ways, are exhibited in the castle. In the museum garden, a number of exhibits can be found, including altars, columns and column capitals, tombstones from the Ottoman period, cannons and cannonballs. An important group of artefacts are amphorae and vessels excavated from under the sea. While You Are Here An area organised in a "zen" style in Marmaris is called "Jinan Garden". This garden is designed in an Asian style with pagoda and pool arrangements. The garden, named after Jinan, the sister city of Marmaris in the Shandong Province of the People's Republic of China, is dedicated to the friendship between the two countries. Additionally, a restaurant is located within the garden. Just below Marmaris Castle, the Caravanserai was constructed in the name of Hafsa Sultan, the mother of Suleiman the Magnificent, and is of a similar period to the castle. The İyilik Rock, which is organised as an archaeological park in the city, the Nimara Cave on Adaköy Paradise Island, and the ancient city of Amos in the Turunç neighbourhood are other historical places and areas arranged for visitors to visit.
