Hoşap Castle is situated in Hoşap (Güzelsu) on the Van-Hakkari highway in the Gürpınar district of Van. The castle is constructed on a steep and rugged rock to the northwest of Hoşap Water. The castle, which dates back to the Urartu state, has survived to the present day as built by the Mahmudi Beys, who were subject to the Ottoman Empire. The inscription on the entrance gate of the inner castle indicates that it was constructed by Mahmudi Süleyman Bey in 1643. The castle was abandoned in the mid-19th century, and its internal structures have survived until the present day. For this reason, it is one of the most remarkable symbolic structures in the region. Hoşap Castle comprises an inner castle and an outer castle to the north. The western entrance and the original gate of the castle are still intact. A Persian inscription about the construction of the castle and lion reliefs on the gate are also present. The surviving remains of the palace and its associated baths, mosque, madrasah, fountains, cisterns, dungeons and rooms can be visited.
