Description

Burdur is situated in the ancient Pisidia region, bordered by Isauria and Lycaonia to the east, Pamphylia to the south, Lycia and Caria to the west, and Phrygia and Galatia to the north. The city has a prehistoric past dating back to the Paleolithic Ages, and the region was inhabited by Neolithic and Chalcolithic Period farmers, as evidenced by excavations in Hacılar, Kuruçay, Bademağacı, and other sites. Findings from Sagalassos and other ancient cities in Burdur, such as Cremna and Kibyra, are displayed on the ground floor of the museum. In this hall, the heads and feet of the colossal statues of Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius, two important emperors of the Roman Empire, are particularly noteworthy. They were unearthed during excavations in 2007-2008 at the Roman Baths in the ancient city of Sagalassos. The upper floor section displays a collection of artefacts from various historical periods. These include Bronze-age ceramics from Hacılar, Kuruçay, Höyücek, and Yarımtepe, finds from Ulupınar Necropolis, Attica Vessels, Hellenistic and Roman Vessels, Oil Lamps, glassware, metal and bronze items, as well as jewelry and coins from the region’s past. Grave steles, altars, architectural objects, friezes, busts of Zeus, sarcophagus lids, milestones, inscriptions, gables and osthotes from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods are displayed in the museum garden around the Pirkulzade Library building.
