Description

The underground city was dug out of volcanic tuff and consists of two levels, rooms and halls, and corridors connecting them. Ventilation is provided by chimneys. The accessible part of the underground city is only a small portion of the extensive underground settlement beneath the main settlement of Mucur. Visitors can explore forty-two rooms, each containing large food and water jars buried in the ground. The rooms contain water wells and niches. The presence of numerous niches in one of the circular rooms suggests it may have been a small place of worship. The narrow and low corridors, which are between half and one metre wide and one and a half metres high, were likely designed to prevent attacks. They were used to pass from one room to another. Circular keystones were used to block entrances to corridors, main passages, and private compartments. Five chimneys, which serve as above-ground air ducts to provide oxygen, are still open.
