Description

The building that houses the Sivas Atatürk Congress Museum occupies a unique position in the foundation of the Turkish Republic. Constructed and used as a school between 1892 and 1911, the building played an important role in the early history of the nation. The Sivas Congress, the first national congress coordinated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was held here between 4 and 11 September 1919. The building continued to serve as the headquarters of the national struggle for 108 days between 2 September and 18 December 1919. In 1924, the building was allocated to Sivas High School and was used as a school building until 1981. In 1983, the building was converted into a museum named Sivas Atatürk Ethnography and Congress Museum. Since 2016, it has been operating as the Atatürk and Congress Museum. On the ground floor of the museum there are the Mondros Armistice and Occupation Room, the Sivas Congress Documentation Room, the National Struggle Press and Broadcasting Activities Room, the Samsun to Sivas Room, the National Struggle Communication Room, the Kuvayi Milliye Municipalities and Congresses Room, the Museum Store, the Conference Hall, the Children's Room and the Library. On the first floor of the museum, there are a number of exhibition rooms, each of which is dedicated to a specific theme. They are: Mustafa Kemal, Commander of the National Struggle, Mustafa Kemal's Room, Congress Hall, Sivas Congress, Thematic Expression of the Sivas Congress, Mandate and Protectorate Problem, Sivas People and Congress, Women in the National Struggle and After the Sivas Congress.
