Villa of Amazons

This villa is named as “Villa of Amazons” because of the amazon images found in the excavation. The Villa of Amazons is composed of rooms aligned around a great hall of rectangular plan located between two symmetrically placed interior yards. The entrance is from the east and has a plan of reversed “T” in east – west direction. Passage is provided from the front yard of the villa to the corridor with apses at both sides and then to the main hall. “Hunting Amazons” mosaic is located at the floor of the rectangular plan room against the entrance. The rooms having lion and tiger figures and where light and fresh air is provided from the interior yards and the other rooms exhibiting the “Ktisis” and “Black Person Leading The Zebra” mosaics are placed symmetrically at the south and north of the main hall.

Ktisis Mosaic

In the mosaic, the depiction of bust of the founding and protecting goddess of the Villa of Amazons Ktisis, is given. A crown ornamented by pearls and precious gems on her head is depicted. Her earring is manufactured in a similar technique and has golden ring and oval pearl. There exists a Necklace on her neck decorated with yellow, green and brown stones. Ktisis holds a grey colored measurement instrument with her fingers on her breast. This measurement instrument is the Roman foot measure and is approximately 29.7 cm. She is dressed in yellow cloak and grey stole. Green covered pillars are depicted at both sides of Ktisis at the shoulder level.

Achilleus’ Life Mosaic

Sections from the life of Achilleus are depicted on the rectangular main panel decorating the hall of the villa. These are, respectively, the figures showing baby Achilleus at the bosom of the nanny, the mother, Thetis, dipping Achilleus into Styx River by grasping him from his heel to make him immortal, farewell of Young Achilleus to his mother, fate goddesses, Moiras, who rove the life thread of Achilleus, traing of Achilleus by wise Kheiron and Thetis following the departure of Achilleus to Troia War with sad eyes. The border surrounding the panel involves figures playing instruments, farm house, running, standing and grazing horses, and sheep and bull figures.
