Description

Pammakaristos Church was rebuilt on the ruins of an old church after the end of Latin rule in Constantinople and the northern part was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church was rebuilt between 1292 and 1294 by Michael Glabas Ducas Tarchainotes, nephew of the Eastern Roman Emperor Michael Palailogos VIII, and a small additional church (parekklesion) dedicated to Jesus Christ was built on the right side of the church in 1315 on the orders of his wife Maria. In this additional church, which is a burial chapel, are the tombs of Maria and Michael. After the conquest, the building was used as a convent for women and in 1455 the patriarchate was moved here and it was used as a patriarchate until 1586. Sultan Murad III (1574-1595) converted the church into a mosque and named it Fethiye. The building was extensively renovated between 1845 and 1846. The parekklesion has a narthex and gallery and the naos section is covered by a dome with a diameter of 2.30 m. The facades of the building reflect the characteristics of late Byzantine architecture. The inscription "Built by Protostratos Michael Glabas Ducas Tarchainotes" is written on the brick architectural band that decorates the southern façade. On the same façade, a poem by the poet Philes is inscribed on the marble cornice. The dome and walls of the parekklesion are decorated with 14th century mosaics. The apse depicts the Deisis, consisting of Jesus Christ, Mary and John the Baptist, with Jesus Christ in the centre of the dome, the 12 Torah prophets in the inner panels and saints and baptismal scenes in the vaults.
