The City of Mosaics Zeugma, meaning bridge, was founded by Seleukos I, one of Alexander the Great's generals. It was one of the most significant cities in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, experiencing its peak in the 2nd century AD. The city hosted high-ranking army officers and was home to the headquarters of the 4th legion of the Roman army. Additionally, it was strategically positioned for trade. Mars Statue The Zeugma Mosaic Museum displays a unique artifact, the bronze Statue of Mars, God of War. The statue was discovered in 2000, hidden beneath the food pithoi in the cellar of the Poseidon Villa. Language of Stones The mosaics depict significant aspects of the lives of the cultured and intellectual elite in Roman Zeugma. Excavations Prof. Dr. Kutalmış Görkay from Ankara University conducts excavations in Zeugma. The unflooded parts of Zeugma contain villas, a theater, colonnaded streets, a bath, an agora, and a temple that are waiting to be unearthed.
