Description

Museum’s Pioneer Ari̇f Müfi̇d Mansel The Side museum is housed in a restored Roman bathhouse in the ancient city and contains artifacts from Side excavations led by Emeritus Professor Arif Müfid Mansel. It is noteworthy for being the first museum to open in a village in Turkey. Side Means “Pomegranate” In The Luwian Language Side is situated on a peninsula, 8 kilometres away from Manavgat, and was the primary port city of Pamphylia in ancient times. Its history dates back to the 8th century BC. The name of the city means 'pomegranate' in the Side language, a branch of the Luwian language. Side was under Lydian rule, along with the entire Pamphylian region, and was also ruled by the Persians and Alexander the Great throughout the 7th century. In the past, the city was frequently targeted by pirates who terrorised the eastern Mediterranean Sea. However, after the Roman Consul Publius Servilius cleared the region of pirates, Pamphylia became the only state in 78 B.C. The antique city of Side was weakened by looting during Arab raids, plunges, and crusades, and was eventually completely abandoned at the beginning of the 12th century. Hellenistic, Roman And Byzantine Works Are Exhibited The Side museum is situated in a bathhouse constructed in the 2nd century, which has undergone modifications and additions in the 5th and 6th centuries. In 1959-1961, the ancient bath, located opposite the Roman period agora (market place), was restored and transformed into a museum. The museum's collection comprises artefacts from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods that were discovered during the excavations of the ancient city. While You Are Here The Köprülü Canyon National Park is a recreation area with high landscape value. It features forests that harbour many endemic species, canyons with natural wonder formations, the Selge Ancient City, and Roman bridges and roads.
