Description

The museum building was originally constructed in 1794 as a two-storey gendarmerie building. Later, the lower floor was converted into a prison. Unfortunately, during the 1921-1922 Greek occupation, the building was completely destroyed and reduced to rubble. However, it was rebuilt on its original foundations in two floors after the Turkish War of Independence. The upper floor served as a courthouse, while the lower floor was used as a prison. The building served as a prison until 1995, after which it was assigned to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1996. In 2007, it was opened as a museum named Bilecik Museum under Söğüt Museum Directorate, and has been under the Bilecik Museum Directorate since 2010. The museum displays artefacts from various historical periods including Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze, Hellenistic, Roman, and Eastern Roman. The exhibits include war tools, ceramics, glass works, and images depicting the establishment of the Ottoman Empire. The ethnography hall showcases sections on camp and domestic life.
