Description

The house, which exemplifies the characteristics of 20th-century Turkish architecture, comprises three floors above the basement. The basement floor was utilised as a warehouse. The upper floors constituted the living areas. Following the proclamation of the Republic, Atatürk undertook a tour of the country, which he named the "Autumn Trip". On 17 September 1924, he arrived in Rize and stayed at the house belonging to Mataracı Mehmet Efendi, who had won his favour thanks to his efforts during the War of Independence. Subsequently, the house was donated to the Rize Special Provincial Administration for the construction of the Atatürk Museum on the 100th anniversary of Atatürk's birth. It was restored and converted into a museum by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on 27 December 1985 and opened to the public.
